I Am What I See – Photography Exhibit by Bernard Carneol

The October Exhibit at the Amity Gallery, “I am what I see” showcases the photography of Bernie Carneol.

From the Artist: 

I photograph in order to understand what I am attracted to and what influences my understanding of who I am.  Photography is an act of self discovery.

My main interest is the life on the streets of cities, mainly New York, and the cities I visited in Europe and the United States. Photographing political demonstrations also interest me.

When I moved to Warwick, New York, I photographed the woods, meadows, and apple orchards. The challenge for me was to photograph nature and not just make pretty pictures, but to try to capture in an honest and direct way how the landscape affected me. 

I was a special education teacher for 23 years and for the last 18 of those years, I taught English, history and photography to high school students. I had a dark room built at the school and was able to teach the complete process of black-and-white photography.

Through photography I communicate to others what I find meaningful. Perhaps it could influence their way of looking at the world.
