The month of May, at the Amity Gallery, features the photographic works of David Horton in his exhibit, “In Search of the Ethereal”. Horton is a uniquely creative artist/photographer who loves to “make” things. From 1962-2000, he not only made photographs, he created “things” to photograph, he made things with photographs, and he made silver print images of staged sets embellished with pencil line and collage elements. Examples from those decades of work are the subject of this exhibit. During the Opening Reception on Saturday, May 3, Horton will demonstrate his unique approach to art with examples from his sculptural art books
Opening Reception on May 3, from 5-7 pm.
His wish is to create art that brings the ethereal into the material world.
Artist’s Statement:
My work is always a playful exploration of the relation between illusion and fact – I relish the question of what is real and what is not. The content of my work evolves from my personal interests in science, mythology, archetypal psychology and spirituality. I play with the comic and am in awe of the cosmic. For me, making art is like making magic. The ac of making is a transformative ritual and creativity is a spiritual activity.
Career Highlights:
David Horton has received three individual artist’s fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, one individual artist’s grant and one Artist Book Publishing Residency grand from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work is in many museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Fogg Art Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum, and the National Museum of Art, as well as numerous private collections.
