Michael Netter – Babel

The Amity Gallery is pleased to present Babel (as in Tower of), June 3 – 25, 2023

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 5-7 pm.

Michael Netter began his artistic career as a videographer working with Andy Warhol in the 70’s.  Later he worked as a design consultant for major brands like Coca Cola and American Express. His artwork, paintings and stencils, involves iconography…symbols and signs.

In this series, artist Michael Netter challenges viewers to find meaning where there is none.  His work often involves iconography – visual symbols, signs and artifacts…small forms that stand for big ideas.  In Babel, Netter challenges viewers to find meaning where there is none using familiar letters and numbers that are scrambled and obscured.  The paintings are more puzzles and riddles than straightforward information and viewers won’t find intentional meaning, only what can be inferred.  The letter and number forms come from Netter’s own handwriting converted into reusable, hand-cut stencils.  He layers images and colors to connote the passage of time (palimpsest).  The paintings are unrefined, more like images randomly seen on a city wall.

Netter is represented by ACA Galleries in NYC.
